“Strong to the CORE”
Pilates

Pilates is a system of exercises based upon aerobics and yoga postures designed by Joseph Pilates.  He believed that mental and physical health are interdependent.

He originally recommended several precise movements emphasizing control and form to assist wounded soldiers attempting to restore their health by strengthening, stretching, and stabilizing key muscles.  Jospeh Pilates created "The Pilates Principles" to condition the entire body.  These principles include proper alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing, and flowing movement.

Traditionally, Pilates is performed using a machine, classically known as the Reformer.  The Reformer offers resistance to exercise in order to build strength, develop proper alignment and posture, and increase flexibility.  Today, mat-based Pilates programs have become increasingly popular, which of course do not require the use of the Reformer.  In the absence of the Reformer, the weight of one’s own limbs, along with gravity, serve to challenge the participant’s core strength.  Static postures are used to increase flexibility and further develop the core muscles.

Susan K. Deitrich, PTA has undergone training in the Stott PilatesÒ Method, and she leads the COAST Physical Therapy “Strong to the CORE” Pilates program.  STOTT PILATES is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates.  A team of physical therapists and sports medicine and fitness professionals developed this method.  These professionals have spent over two decades refining the STOTT PILATES method of exercise.  The result of their work is the inclusion of modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation, making it one of the safest and most effective methods available to strengthen spinal musculature.  To get started on making your back “Strong to the CORE” through Pilates, call COAST Physical Therapy today at 315.253.3291.
